Athens Tourist Attractions

The ancient archeological site, heritage structures and water sports are the main Tourists attractions of Athens. Tourists are somehow not yet attracted to the wildlife of Athens.

Acropolis
First time visitor to Athens head straight away to the Acropolis. Most of us are familiar with this citadel, which is balanced on a flat rock about this expansive city. It is from here that the Greek civilization began sprawling. This structure which is in ruins was originally constructed way back in the 4th century BC.

To its right is a temple of Athena Nike which has been rebuilt and restored. The built most supreme monument of Doric architecture, The Parthenon is the greatest tourist attraction of Athens. It is built from marble which was quarried from the nearby mountain. An Acropolis museum houses some of the carvings and frescoes which were recovered from the temple.

Ancient Agora
Huddled beneath the Acropolis are the ruins of the Agora, the commercial and community centre of ancient Athens. Socrates and Plato the great theorist once preached here. Several ancient buildings lie in ruins at this place like Stoa of Attalos of 200BC. It has been restored; this reconstructed building how holds relics which are about 5000 years old.

National Archaeological Museum
The popularity of this museum makes this place a crowd-puller. Its huge collection includes treasures, figurines, sculptures and frescoes. The places of tourists attraction of Athens are all heritage structure.

Piraeus
This ancient port of Athens has been the departure spot for numerous island ferries and ships. There are many seafood restaurants and a street market nearby. The museum in the vicinity features a replica of ancient and contemporary ships. Though not Athens popular tourist attraction it is bustling place. Yachting also attracts tourists to Athens.

Plaka
This part has become a gathering place for tourists and travelers. Churches, stately mansions, tavernas, ancient monuments and win courtyards are a common sight here.

Kolonaki

Syntagma Square
This square which was built in 1840 as an imperial palace is now houses the Parliament building. Thousands flock here to picture the strangely clad guards of the palace, who are ceremoniously changed very hour.

The Byzantine Museum, The Benaki museum, Museum of Cycladic Art are all clustered around this place. The tourists’ attractions of Athens are mostly in ruins. Tourists are attracted to Athens mainly to view the historical structures.
