Chennai is often called as a Gateway of South India. The city of Chennai is located in the coramandal coast of Bay of Bengal. Chennai is a vibrant city and a hub of various activities. Traditionally the city of Madras, as it was formerly known is an important commercial and cultural center.

Women decorate their door steps with beautiful Kolams (rangoli) using rice powder. The kolams symbolize both, decoration as well as religious significance. The idea behind using rice powder for drawing kolam is to feed the small insects such as ants.

During festival seasons there is heavy competition among women to draw most beautiful Kolams in front of their houses. Some cultural organizations even give prices for the most attractive Kolams.
