People of Darjeeling

The entire population of Darjeeling is very colorful. The whole population lives in harmony and has lived this way for a long time. There are also many Christians in the Lepcha community. The initial Lepcha faith was based upon spirits, witchcraft and exorcism The Lepcha deities are Itbumoo, Rom, Kongchen Konglo, Itbu, Debu Rom and also Tamsang Thing.

They have several festivals like Namsoong. The males wear striped Pagi. The upper part is called Tago and the lower part is Domdyan. Lepchas are good archers. Though they are various parts they are Darjeeling people today and they carry the respect of being people of Darjeeling.

The people of Darjeeling include the Nepalese, the Nepal immigrants. They are the dominant people of Darjeeling. They are subdivided into castes based on dialects such as Gorkhas are known for their prowess and have a traditional weapon, an ornamental knife. Another Nepal community is the Kiratis. Originally they were shepherds and hunters. The Kiratis sects have their own dialect. Some tribes are animists, while others are Hindus or Buddhists. The Kiratis comprise of Rais, Limbus, Grurngs, Tamangs and Mangars. The Darjeeling people have another class of people with broad foreheads, aquiline noses, large eyes and tall stature. The people of Darjeeling understood the common language spoken, the Nepalese. They used the Devnagari script. The Newars are the Nepal valley inhabitants possessing their own script, literature and language. They are good sculptors, metal workers and wood carvers. The Newari language is old and is a blend of Chinese and Burmese languages. The Bhutia family is of Tibetan origin and found in Sikkim and Darjeeling. The inhabitants are known as Lachungpas and Lachenpas. In this manner, you can see that the entire Darjeeling people are from various sects of Nepal.
