Beaches in Phoenix

Phoenix is a nice place to visit but if you have travelled to Phoenix in search of a decent beach then forget it. Phoenix’s nearest beach is about five hours away by car.

The possibilities are normally limited to either a journey over the border to Mexico, or take a trip to San Diego. Beaches in Phoenix are a natural impossibility as it is part of Arizona, a landlocked state, although some witty individuals may call the whole state a beach as it is a desert state.

So if in Arizona then looking for Phoenix’s nearest beach is going to involve a journey. Phoenix’s nearest beach is actually across the border in Mexico at Puerto Peñasco, or Rocky Point. It is a four hour drive from Phoenix although it does obviously mean a trip across the border; this means it is necessary to take a passport and also Mexican car insurance.

Once there though there is an excellent beach, known as Sandy Beach. The beach is a favourite for Phoenix residents, although there is no shade so some may find the sand and sun too hot for their liking. The other thing to consider is that you will be hassled by beach vendors.

Travel to Phoenix

As there is no Phoenix beach, many natives decide on a trip to San Diego to visit one of the beaches at Mission Bay, La Jolla or Ocean Beach. It may take an additional hour by road, but there are fewer complexities in getting there.

The San Diego beaches are considered some of the best in the States, and the sandy nature and year round pleasant climate make them favourite venues for those from Phoenix, although they are a bit to far for a day trip.

Occasionally there may be a few artificial beaches in Phoenix set up to host parties or beach volleyball competitions. They will though only be temporary beaches. Within the vicinity of the city the only other Phoenix beach likely to be found is by one of the lakes. These beaches though are made from stone and pebbles and are neither the most comfortable to lie on, or good to walk on.

There are some beaches along the Colorado River that might be classed as a Phoenix beach but to be truthful they are not ideal places for sunbathing. There are normally just used as a lunching platform for river craft.
